Video Express
Video Express is a self recording studio for students, faculty, and staff at Purdue University. This project reimagines a self-service video recording system with a focus on customization and creative control. The primary goal was to help users personalize their recordings through features such as AI-generated backgrounds, a personal media library, and a shared community library. Through user research and iterative design, we explored how these features could integrate seamlessly into existing workflows. The designs balance flexibility, usability, and technical constraints.
My Role: Project Lead, UX Designer, UX Researcher, UX Writer
Project Duration: August 2025 - December 2025
In Collaboration with Purdue University IT Department.
Solution Implemented in December 2025.
Meet the Team!
Led a team of 6 to implement new features for the website and in studio tablet experience. Worked directly with our sponsors from the Purdue IT department. Thanks to our sponsors for guiding us: Christina Vandenoever and Kenny Wilson.
Brief Overview
Purdue Information Technology’s UX team is a dynamic group dedicated to crafting innovative, user-centric platforms that address the diverse business needs of Purdue University. They offer a service on campus called Video Express available to students, faculty and staff. Video Express is a self recording studio in which users can record academic and professional content with multiple locations across campus. Basic features currently exist such as uploading presentation materials, utilizing a teleprompter, and selecting a background from the provided options. Our team intends to identify pain points and implement new features ultimately increasing usability of the platform.
Final Solution
All designed pages were newly created and were not part of the existing system. The designs follow the Purdue Design Library to ensure visual and structural consistency.
Website
New Home Page featuring personal library, AI image generation, and access to community files.
In Studio Tablet
New pages featuring personal library and community files.
Research
-
Conducted research on Gemini, ChatGPT, Co-Pilot, Reve, Sora, etc. to understand AI Prompt Interfaces. Many of these existing ideas influence our design interface of our AI Image generation feature such as the chat history, and placement of prompt box.
-
Continuous usability testing sessions throughout the project with a total of 10 faculty and staff members. Very iterative prototyping from wireframes to Hi-Fi prototypes. Implemented Agile methodology through two week design sprints.
-
Created an experience map highlighting the end to end user journey of the recording process. Identified key pain points and challenges as well as potential ideas to further consider during the brainstorming and sketching phases.
-
Met with a team of developers to understand system capabilities regarding our AI feature as well as community filters. Gained valuable suggestions such as providing error messages, limiting amount of storage available, and adjusting filter design to better reflect the underlying system.
